Advancing responsive design and supportive electronics. For now and the future.

Project Mission

People want to live at home comfortably, safely and independently for as long as possible - survey after survey documents this fact.  However, conventional home design and construction practices don’t match capabilities residents have at different life stages.  As a result, people of all ages may live with inconvenience, serious safety concerns, or be forced move because they encounter barriers daily.

Sir Winston Churchill captured this reality in his profound insight that, "We shape our dwellings, and afterwards our dwellings shape us."  Newer design strategies, construction/remodeling techniques and products can resolve many of the problems conventional home design creates.  However, the public and many contractors either aren't aware of or routinely using them.

We're also in the middle of an electronic health/wellness revolution.  Treatment, therapy and support previously were only delivered in medical or care settings.  Now, they're available remotely at home, in group locations, and increasingly when we're mobile.  The array of innovative home telehealth technologies is rapidly expanding, but the public and many service providers, again, aren’t aware of or using them.

Additionally, we're facing a demographic imperative in the U.S. now that boomers are becoming seniors.  They'll be aging in place in record numbers, and seeking "lifetime communities" with flexible "lifetime housing" opportunities.  Communities are being challenged to proactively respond.

These newer design, technology and lifestyle opportunities all can "…make homes "fit" for long-term living," and the Lifetime Home Project is committed to advancing their understanding and use.
